The world's first diesel-free arctic station powered by hydrogen fuel, initiated by the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology

International Arctic Station Snowflake is the global first-of-its-kind fully autonomous year-round diesel-free arctic facility powered by hydrogen fuel and renewable energy sources.

The Snowflake is the Arctic Hydrogen Energy Applications and Demonstrations (AHEAD) project, which was endorsed by all Arctic countries on June 8, 2020, at SDWG Arctic Council Plenary Meeting.

The Station will be an engineering testbed and «living laboratory» for implementation environment-friendly future technologies in the following technological areas:

Energy, heat and water supply, waste disposal;
Hybrid transport, autonomous robotics based on hydrogen;
New materials and construction technologies;
Telecommunications and «smart home/village» systems;
Medicine and technology of «Living systems»;
Aero- and hydroponics;
etc.

The station creates working environment for up to 80 people – engineers, developers, students, researchers, and scientists.

Russia has launched the design of the station in Yamal, and it is scheduled to open in 2024.
